Match Reports

Round 1: Maccabi Ajax Saints v Mount Waverley White

A warm but extremely windy Sunday morning at Caulfield Park Oval No 6 greeted players and parents.

The start of a new season had the nerves on edge both amongst the playing group and the coach. Many thanks to Steve Hewitt for umpiring for the match.

Our openers Jake Walton and Kris Parathan followed instructions perfectly. Both players rotated the strike beautifully and actively looked for the quick singles. Kris made 4 but looked very good in defence. He did his job perfectly for the team. Jake clicked into overdrive and started to plunder the bowling attack. A stylish and dynamic innings of 31 NO was called to a halt when the coach retired him.

Mitch O’Donnell came in on the fall of Kris’ wicket and wasted no time in stamping his authority on the game. Loose balls were despatched regularly to the boundary. With a half century beckoning, the killjoy coach called a sudden halt to the innings when Mitch was on 36 NO.

Next up was Thomas Murray - a new boy to the team who has in the space of 2 weeks endeared himself to his teammates and parents. Thomas looked a class above the bowling attack and after a slightly nervous start exploded with a flurry of brutal strokes. 4, 4 and 6 off three consecutive shots demoralised the opposition and had his teammates on their feet, applauding. Thomas was retired on 39NO.

In strolled the skipper Matt Barton. A chance early on in the innings did not perturb Matt who elegantly compiled a quick fire 25NO.  Dean Hewitt was next up and a surprisingly good ball had Deano dismissed cheaply.

Dave ( bruiser) Santa Lucia had been hidden down the list for a bit of hefty hitting. Dave did not disappoint, clubbing his way to 26 NO before the coach invoked the mercy rule on the opposition and retired him.
Thomas Crosbie was next up and demonstrated his value to the makeup of the team with a quick 5 runs. Well Done Thomas.
Paul Ewart came and went quickly but Paul would stamp his authority on the game with the ball. Thanks Paul for agreeing to move yourself down the batting list.

Tom McFarlane-Ahern hit a cracking shot but to the amazement of all at the ground, was caught.
Chris Young was next in and did his job well - only 1 run but a valuable stay at the crease. Good job Chris.

We ended up on 5/190 off 24 overs - a good display boys.

The bowling was tight.

Paul Ewart took 3/1 off his 4 overs. A classy display by Paul had the opposition floundering from the start.
Thomas Murray bowled into the wind and like Paul was too much for the opposition. Figures of 1/1 off 4 overs were testament to the quality of his bowling.

Wickets were also taken by Chris Young (1/3 off 2 overs) and Kris Parathan (2/5 off 2 overs). Great job Chris and Kris.
The opposition mustered 7/56 off their 24 overs.

Boys, I expect the quality of the opposition will improve over the next few weeks but I cannot fault your professionalism with the bat and ball.

Many thanks to Matty Barton and Paul Ewart for directing the troops in the middle.
Thank you too to Kim O’Donnell for scoring duties under what clearly appeared to be trying circumstances. Also a thank you to all the parents for their support.

Regards

Michael O’Donnell
